Change is a constant in agriculture.
Markets shift. Technology evolves. Operations grow and adapt.
The farmers who navigate those changes best often share one trait.
Curiosity.
"Curiosity keeps farmers moving forward."
A Hard Transition
A few years ago, I made one of the hardest decisions of my farming career. I sold my herd of four hundred Jersey cattle.
I loved being a dairy farmer. Letting those cows go was not just a business decision. It felt personal.
For a while, if I am being honest, I lost some of my enthusiasm.

Curiosity Rebuilds Momentum
What brought that energy back was curiosity.
As our farm began transitioning into a cow-calf operation, I became fascinated with the idea of virtual fencing. I researched everything I could find. I asked questions. I talked with others who were experimenting with it.
The more I learned, the more interested I became.
Even when EQIP funding did not come through, we decided to move forward anyway. We took a leap of faith and purchased the collars. Curiosity pulled me forward during a season when it would have been easy to stay stuck.

Curiosity in Agriculture
I see this pattern with many of the farmers and families I work with. The ones who stay resilient through change keep asking questions.
What could work better here?
What haven’t we tried yet?
What might the next version of this farm look like?
Curiosity opens the door to new ideas, new technology, and new ways of thinking about old problems.
In Closing
Curiosity has a way of carrying us through difficult seasons.
And more often than not, the ideas that move agriculture forward start with a simple question asked somewhere out in the back 40.
Curiosity is often the starting point for meaningful change. The next step is turning those questions into clear decisions.
If you are working through a transition or exploring what is next for your operation, schedule a conversation to think it through.
