Fire in the Belly vs. Burnout: What gritty leaders need to know

Updated: a few seconds ago

What’s a common theme I see? I’m glad you asked. The people who care the most, push the hardest, and stay committed the longest are often the ones who reach burnout first. Passion and perseverance are strengths, but without awareness and boundaries, they can become liabilities.

When Grit Turns To Grind

In agriculture and rural leadership especially, grit is almost a requirement. We work long hours, shoulder heavy responsibility, and feel loyal to our teams, families, and communities. But grit without rest or reflection can turn into exhaustion, frustration, and disengagement. That tension is exactly why this conversation matters.

During this Dairy Girl Network Enhance webinar I pulled from the archives, I walked through practical strategies leaders can use to build resilience in a sustainable way. These tools help you recognize when your fire is burning bright and when it is burning you out.

  • Identifying early warning signs

  • Understanding your personal stress patterns

  • Creating habits that protect your capacity instead of draining it

I’ve Been There

Small shifts make a difference, and leaders who practice them consistently stay grounded and focused longer. This topic is close to my heart because I have seen both sides. I have felt the excitement that comes from meaningful work, and I have also felt the weight of carrying too much for too long.

Hosting conversations like this is part of why I love speaking. When people understand how to balance passion with sustainability, they show up more fully for their teams and for themselves.
