Many families know they need to start transition planning. What they don't always know is where to begin.
The process can feel overwhelming. Between family dynamics, financial decisions, ownership structures, and future goals, it's easy to become stuck before meaningful conversations even begin.
That's why I encourage families to start with a simple question:
How ready are we?
1. Senior Leadership Awareness
The first area focuses on the current leadership team.
Are senior leaders willing to move from directing to advising? Are they actively creating opportunities for others to lead? Do they recognize that transition is part of leadership, not the end of it?
Readiness increases when senior leaders embrace their role as mentors and advisors.
2. Junior Leadership Capacity
The second area focuses on the next generation.
Are future leaders actively building their skills? Are they asking for responsibility? Are they learning about business management, leadership, and financial decision-making?
Leadership readiness isn't about age. It's about growth.
3. Financial Clarity
Many families struggle here.
Do decision-makers understand the financial health of the operation? Is there a budget? Are financial results reviewed regularly? Can key stakeholders confidently discuss the numbers?
Financial clarity creates confidence and supports better decision-making throughout the transition process.
4. Stakeholder Alignment
Transition affects more than just owners.
Spouses, siblings, family members, and future leaders all play a role.
Do stakeholders share a common vision? Have honest conversations occurred? Are people ready to move forward?
Alignment doesn't require unanimous agreement, but it does require open communication.
The Goal Isn't a Perfect Score
One of the most important things to remember is that this assessment isn't about earning 100 points.
It's about identifying opportunities. Every operation has strengths. Every operation has challenges. The value comes from understanding where you are today so you can determine where to focus next.
Final Thoughts
Transition planning doesn't begin with legal documents.
It begins with awareness.
If you're not sure where to start, start by evaluating these four areas. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is progress. And progress starts with honest conversations.
